So it is a Saturday afternoon and here I find myself recording the band SouthEnder in the studio. This Pop-Punk group is made up of four members. Band leader Matt is on drums as his main instrument, as well as providing backing vocals to the songs. Matt has been my main contact to this point and has been very gracious about his time and openness to this project. Communication about what we want to do has been smooth.
SouthEnder is a two guitar group.
Andy is one of the guitar players and he plays through a Marshall amplifier. I chose to mic up his 4×12 cabinet with the Cascade VinJet ribbon microphone, evening out the edge on the “highs” of the tone. The second guitar player Bill plays an Epiphone seven string guitar through Sovtek amplifier head we decided to mic up with the classic SM57.
The solid low end is carried out by Corey on bass who plays a nice Fender jazz bass rig through Gallien Krueger amplifier head direct into my Universal Audio preamp. After seeing this group play live at the Matrix Coffee House in Chehalis I decided to have the group play all at the same time in the studio live. Can you say LOUD?! I wouldn’t have it any other way. The band had prepared by rehearsing very well with all their songs including doing them without vocals so that when it came time to record we didn’t have to have any formal mic set up, just 13 instrument mics.
Normally there would be a lot of bleed between the guitars and drums in the session, but between baffles and the right mic choices the sounds were very isolated and clear. These guys have a massive sound. The first day was spent tracking about half of the songs, then we took a break and decided to record some vocals and overdubs that afternoon.
The next day (Sunday) we track the other remaining songs on the drums, guitar and bass, then went on to further finish tracking of the different instruments.
These guys were a lot of fun to work with and very well rehearsed so everything went very smoothly considering how fast we were able to record the LP… One thing that always makes things go off without a hitch is working with quality musicians like these guys and quality songwriting with real nice melodic musical parts. There was a lot of energy in that room and I hope that comes across for the guys and everyone who listens to this in the future. So if you haven’t ever heard of them please check out SouthEnder and enjoy the goodness.
