The Olson Bros Band are a pop-rock-country group out of the Olympia area currently working on an EP to release soon. Unlike most projects that come through my door, this group has a recording junkie in the group. Luke Olson is the designated recording engineer and has taken it upon himself to do most of their recording. But when they decided they needed a little bit of help with the drum sound they came to me. Drums are really one of the trickiest instruments to record properly. It takes a lot of microphones, a lot of patience, and a lot of experience and I was honored to be picked to help with the burgeoning country super-group. The session was to feature half of the group with vocalist Isaac Olson and bass player Nate Collins sitting this one out.
So in walk the guys fresh off a late night gig the night before, yet renewed and ready to go. Our goal is to record the drums and as time permits a little bit of acoustic guitar as well as some rhythm guitar. We set up the drum microphones started doing some testing with some different placement of microphones and tone and then began to record.
Luke gave me the backing tracks to use as a guide for drummer James Blackburn to play along to. Each song only took a couple of takes and I have to say it was pretty exciting to hear a finished mixes of music that these guys came up with. Dialing in the real drums was the icing on the cake. The Olson Bros Band is a very talented young group of guys who with excellent songwriting skills and arrangements chops. They really know what they’re doing. After we finished the drums on 5 songs we added some acoustic and electric guitar, then exported all the files so that Luke could take them and integrate them with his existing mixes, crafting the finished songs.
I look forward to hearing the final mixes and I know the guys are excited to get them released so everyone can hear what they’ve been up to. I really feel that The Olson Bros Band are headed for great things, so take note and go check them out live, they are well worth a listen with a fresh country sound.
