A couple of years ago I recorded a blues rock group called The Freckles Brown Band. This group was led by Fred Doughty. Now Fred is back with his latest incarnation musical adventure with his group the Calaca Kings. Recorded September 2014 the new album “Na Na Lanna” is a great album from a very professional sounding band. This group includes his sons Jordan (drums), and Andy (bass and guitar) as well as returning keyboard player Perry Hanchey.
Also brought in, was vocalist Tiffany Theis to add some additional flair for harmonies and lead vocals, which I found a great compliment to Fred’s blues vocal style as you can hear on the title track “Na Na Lanna” below. To keep the songs fresh and interesting, additional instruments added were blues harmonica played by super star session harp player Buzz Murphy through my Shure green bullet mic and hoodoo amp. Buzz has performed with musicians the likes of John Fogerty and Dolly Parton among many others. Also, you will find additional saxophone work by Peter Jones to add some additional flavor.
After mixing and mastering, the project moved on to Atomic Disc for duplication. Fred came up with some really dynamic cover artwork, some of the most colorful I’ve ever seen, as you can see causing inquisitive minds to want to click through and listen to what it sounds like, I know I do.
I feel that what made this project special was the inclusion of friends and family giving their best performances, their influences and style to songs that Fred had written. I felt even I was able to contribute making this one of Fred’s highest musical achievements to date, using some of his words.
Have a listen. CDs are now available and they are often playing out shows and all-age festivals, including an upcoming date Saturday May 30th at Northwest Harley Davidson for a Relay for Life Event. You can learn more about the group on their Facebook page.
Have a listen to the sample track below and can check the album out further on Itunes to download your copy! I’m looking forward to the next project with Fred and the Calaca Kings.
